Artist Statement:
I've always had the desire to create a painting of The Cabot's marquee, but time consistently got away from me. It's somewhat ironic that the opportunity presented itself after relocating from Beverly, where I lived and worked for nearly twenty years. A painting that would have originally been created to reproduce onto Beverly-themed gifts, is instead being painted from a nostalgic point of view. A point of view that I hope resonates with North Shore locals as The Cabot prepares for their upcoming monumental marquee change.
When I learned that The Cabot would be updating their marquee, I wanted to take the opportunity to capture its place in time and celebrate it. I have always envisioned doing a painting of it during the day with a crisp blue sky. There are so many shades of blue already happening in the marquee, from the teal paint on the outside of the letters to the neon, as well as the various shades found in the shadows the metal letters create. I pictured bringing all of this blue across the canvas, contrasting it with the stark white of the letters and pops of a neon underpainting to create a contemporary take on this beloved icon of Beverly.
The Robin sitting on the marquee exists for a couple of reasons. Many people know me for my bird-themed artwork and I thought it could be a fun way to put an "Alyssa" spin on a subject that's been painted by so many artists before me. Birds are also symbols, and Robins symbolize new beginnings and good things to come. So I thought this was a very appropriate way to celebrate the change from the existing marquee to the new one.
Completing this painting allowed me to reflect on my time spent in Beverly. The skills I learned at Montserrat were utilized and I pushed myself hard with this piece. It is much larger than my usual work and getting the drawing of the marquee just right before moving onto paint was absolutely crucial. I'm very happy with the results and I'm excited to share it with all of The Cabot community.
